Disadvantages for California From People Migrating Their From Oklahoma
Although California experienced some benefits from the migration of people from Oklahoma during the dust bowl, there were many disadvantages for California as well. Since many people were migrating to California all at once, many of those migrants who had made the rough journey out to California were turned away from its borders. Policemen and guardsmen would not let more "Okies" to cross into California. The reason for this was the fear by California officials of overpopulation and overcrowding. For those who did cross over into California, they found that job openings were becoming scarce because there were too many people looking for jobs at that time. As a result, many of these migrants became unemployed and could not support their family. Even if migrants did find jobs, the jobs were mainly low in pay to buy food or other needed goods. Many migrants thought that they were coming to California for a better life, but the fact is that many of them either could not find good paying jobs or they were turned away from the state. Over time, the state of California gained a bad reputation because of the unemployment that was created as a result of over migration, and because of the hard stance that California took against allowing migrants to cross into its borders. In the end, California did not turn out to be the paradise that many of the migrant people from Oklahoma were expecting, to the point that they started thinking that their lives in California were almost worse than their lives back in Oklahoma.
